The Other O's Green Page

I’ll be updating this page as I get links to helpful and/or interesting Eco-Friendly websites.
If we all do a little something different, it will make a huge difference for the environment.

    1. Hi! I joined the group and added the bulbs I changed but the chart on this page didn’t change. Did I do this right?

    2. And, that “more hip than hippie” podcast made me mad because they are anti-vegan! You can hear that just in their theme song. By NOT participating in factory farms (almost all the meat you buy, organic, cage free or whatever comes from factory farms) you save the environment from TONS of polution. Factory farms are one of the largest producers of waste on the planet!!! Even if you don’t care about animal rights, but still want to help save the environment, then this is something to think about! I’m not preaching, I know everyone hates that. People are going to eat what they want to eat; everyone has that right to choose and I don’t judge people for it. But, factory farms really do impact our planet in a very negative way. Its so easy to avoid giving your money to a huge corporation by just making minor changes in your diet. Some people say they eat meat becuase it tastes good. Well, its simple to find other, HEALTHIER foods that taste good, that do not pollute, if you just give it a try. Alright, I’m shutting up now…

    4. Hey, Omi!

Love the green page. Just wanted to let you know that the black background is pointless, even though it looks great. Well, it’s pointless if you have an LCD display as you and I do. If you’re still using a big CRT (the picture tube kind with some depth), the black does help but not like replacing it with LCD does. Based on the article linked in from Blackle, it appears it would help CRTs more than expected.

Most LCDs use CFL (compact fluorescents) to light them up. (A few MacBooks have LEDs which use even less energy). In either case, the backlight is always on until the power software shuts it off. By having a black background, you’re setting the liquid crystals to block all light but the energy is still spent producing the light. There’s a trivial amount of energy used to turn a pixel black. Zero energy is used to make a pixel white. I like the black to go with the photos and that amount of energy is reeeeeally minimal. To quote the gov document that blackle cites/links, “Among the few LCD monitors in the table, the power used to display a white screen is indistinguishable from power used to display the desktop. Thus, it appears that display color is a significant determinant of on power for CRTs, but not for LCDs.”

As you said, CRTs use a ton more energy and a black background only helps them. LCDs are so cheap these days that most companies have dumped their CRTs for the energy savings alone. Mine did about three years ago. Those concerned about energy use should also consider making the change when their finances allow.

    5. So, would it be appropriate for me to add my CCFL bulbs that were changed years ago?
